rules for ride-alongs.

posted on another board, and figured i'd post it here...from my experience with a Deputy i know pretty well. went on two 12's with him, had a lot of fun. add to the rules if you are bored enough/want to educate people.

1) don't fart in the car.

2) shut the hell up when the radio is going.

3) ask in advance if the cop minds questions or not

4) shut the hell up when the radio is going.

5) don't show up with a gun on your belt and a CCW badge on your chest.

6) do what you're told, when you're told, for everybody's safety.

7) don't scratch your nuts all night long.

anything to add? thats pretty much what i've picked up along the way, but only been on a couple. was a great time, VERY educational, and i hope to do it again someday.

Stay in the car unless you are allowed to.

Nothing annoys me more than taking care of a traffic stop, looking up across from me and seeing a rider.

+1, I had one the other day. He kept getting out of the car on calls and it pissed me off.

Don't talk to people, if you are allowed out of the car.

And if you do get out, and people talk to you, refer all questions, comments, cares, concerns they may have to the officer you're with.

I had a reserve riding with me a few weeks ago, and every call we went on he would start interviewing somebody. Or giving advice. Or whatever.

I finally had to tell him to STFU.

I always asked in advance what the deputy wanted me to do on traffic stops. Most of them wanted me out of the car, and standing at the back corner of the vehicle.

Oh that would suck!

Thankfully the only riders I have are recruits in the FTO program. We try to get them involved as much as they can handle.

Our chaplains ride with us from time to time. I don't mind them for the most part. They are pro law enforcement and they always show up for our death notifications(big plus). They already know when to talk and when not to. I think they go through a pretty good instruction phase before riding begins. Then again I can't think of any of them that are young wannabes.

Skunk cabbage
While waves wrapped
Intricate lacings of weeds
'Round mule spinners

His cyanotic eyes
Were hard enough to make
The sun turn tail and
Tender enough to attract me
To his world of illusion

Personally, that's the way I do things too.

You won't learn much about this job if you stay in the car the whole time. I figure if you want to ride along, you may as well get out of the car to see what is happening!

I told mine on stops stay behind the passenger door, on calls stay in the car unless I tell you "come on" then keep two paces back & to my right side. If things really go to shit, run & get to the radio.

Don't dress like a wannabe thug, and on the same token, don't show up looking like a rejected extra from some SWAT or War movie. Smart Casual and comfortable. Slacks and a golf shirt, etc.

I've been on a couple rides, and that seems to be the second thing I've always been told.

First thing I've always ben told...."Listen to and obey me."

Damn, guess I wont be doing a ride-along with you for awhile..... jp hannah.

Anyways, I always ask what the officer wants me to do if:

1) He or she is getting her ass kicked
Usually responce is get in there and help, I'm like NO DUH!!!
2) What they want me to do on traffic stops
Usually responce is help me out and look from the secondary officers position, into the car.

3) Do they mind if I ask them questions?

Those are just the standard, and depending on the answers to them, others will follow.
