Deputy Injured in Head-On

Call me superstitious, but I don't like to put news about injured officers in the Officer's Down section. The deputy drives an Expedition, and it was totaled.

Deputy one of two injured in Rincon head-on crash
By Susan Shroder Union-Tribune Staff Writer

6:49 p.m. May 9, 2009

VALLEY CENTER — A sheriff's deputy was one of two people injured in a head-on crash Saturday on Valley Center Road near state Route 76 on the Rincon Indian Reservation, closing the road in both directions for nearly five hours, authorities said.

Sheriff's Deputy Anthony Radicia was traveling northbound on Valley Center Road near Gulch Road about 8:50 a.m. in a marked sheriff's Ford Expedition when a vehicle trying to turn into a driveway crossed the double yellow lines and collided head-on with his SUV, said sheriff's Lt. Julie Sutton.

The deputy was able to get out of his severely damaged Expedition and help the other driver, whose vehicle also had major damage, Sutton said.

The deputy and the other driver, a woman from Los Angeles whose name was not yet released, were taken to Palomar Hospital in Escondido for treatment of minor injuries, Sutton said.

The woman was not familiar with the area and had earlier been visiting the nearby Harrah's Rincon casino, Sutton said.

The California Highway Patrol closed the road until about 1:30 p.m. while officers investigated the crash.

A CHP dispatcher said she did not know if the woman was cited.

Both the woman and the deputy were alone in their vehicles, Sutton said.

You're not kidding, from the looks of things, she needs to be cited.
