Daycare death

I have much props for the guys that handled this call - I only heard about this and had thoughts of seriously hurting someone's feelings about this case...

I don't know if I could contain myself on scene...

apparently a daycare worker forgot a 3 year old in the daycare van - keep in mind that it only got to 99 degrees on yesterday on Baton Rouge... not counting the head index (and the temp that that van interior could get to)

Guys I might very well loose my verified status over an issue like this if it involved my daughter.

Sad but understandable. When are people going to wake up and pay attention to the helpless?

Same case, same paper, different article. I'll bold some of the highlights I think are just astounding.

Child care center could lose license again

Posted: July 1, 2009 10:57 PM

By Keitha Nelson - bio | email
BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Wanda's Kids World, the child care center where a three-year-old girl died in one of its vans, has been in business for more than two decades and over the years, several complaints have been filed and now the Department of Social Services says it is considering revoking its license.
Inspectors from the Department of Social Services say they visited the day care just three days ago. They say if Wanda's license is revoked, it could be permanent. The license was taken away twice before, according to state records. DSS reports show that Wanda's Kids World had a number of deficiencies during several inspections.
In May of this year, DSS cited the place with two deficiencies, including failure to provide an adequate staff-to-child ratio when transporting children under the age of five. In February, there were more allegations of deficiencies, including not having CPR and pediatric first aid certification for at least 50% of the staff. The report also stated that the van used to transport kids was not up to par.
According to DSS, there are regulations in place to help prevent incidents like Wednesday's from happening. Child care centers are supposed to log the time when a child is picked up, when they arrive at the child care center, and when they enter the place. Also, DSS's regulations state that an inspection of the van should have been done by a worker at Wanda's.
The inspection indicates that management at the facility could not show that all staff members had criminal record clearance.

I've copied and pasted this from the article for obvious reasons.

In May of this year, DSS cited the place with two deficiencies, including failure to provide an adequate staff-to-child ratio when transporting children under the age of five.

The State failing to act and pursue this violation, IMO, has a direct relation to this child dying.

The thing that struck me most about this case, was that the child remained in the van from 0900 (9:00 am) until she was found dead at 1500 (3:00 pm). Six hours and no one even missed her.

This is perhaps the most irresponsible and ridiculous part of the entire story. Someone picked her up, and had to see her, then completely forgot about her when the van was unloaded. Then, she sat and baked in that van for six hours. By law, she would have had to have been buckled up in a child seat when transported.

I'm with you guys. I really can't say how well I could have maintained composure here.

And THIS is why I chose to stay home with my kids. I can work part-time and put off going full-time until they're old enough to not have to rely on idiots.

The older brother asked for his sister all day with no response from caregivers.

Understandable, hell it would be hard for me to maintain a professional bearing even if it wasn't my kid in this case. What a tragic , stupid waste of a young, innocent life.

I was about to point that out too...

not that no one necessarily responded... from what it sounded like, more like they blew him off and just didn't pay any attention to anything he said...

seems like something would've clicked and someone would've gone out there...

and CB - she was found in her carseat from what I understand... which begs the question... here was the seat located, and why didn't the worker catch it... or why wasn't a headcount done?

answered my question - article from today...

the sister was seated next to the victim, with the sister buckled in closest to the window in the van - which stands to reason that someone would have to go over the 3 year old in order to get the other sister out of her seat...

so how did they miss her?

I can see a lot of problems for quite a few people in this case... but it'll never be enough

There's usually a couple of incidents like that every year around Dallas, both daycare and parents.

Usually they get a slap on the wrist and probation for negligent homicide or less, especially the parents - It's about time these idiots started racking up some serious prison time as an example to other idiots as well as any mothers who just like to kill their kids.

Agreed. We don't need any more "Susan Smiths" doing this sort of thing, either.

This should definitely go criminal. The incredible extent of the negligence goes way past an "accident".
