RIDGELAND, Miss. --
Police say a shoplifting suspect who was shot by Ridgeland police has died.
Derrick Watkins, 19, of Jackson, died Sunday night at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, police said.
A Ridgeland police officer suffered a broken leg after he was hit by a car allegedly driven by Watkins, officials said. His leg is in a cast, but he has been released from Baptist Medical Center, Lt. John Neal said. The officer's name has not been released.
Ridgeland police officers shot Watkins at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday as he tried to drive out of Wal-Mart's parking lot, officials said. Watkins then crossed the median on County Line Road and crashed his car near Toys "R" Us.
Police Chief Jimmy Houston said officers shot Watkins in self-defense.
This is my Department. Send some prayers for the officer if you will.
