CHULA VISTA A Border Patrol agent is in the hospital Tuesday with life-threatening injuries after he was struck by a speeding wrong-way driver. The unidentified agent was riding a motorcycle on his way to work when he was struck by Gregory Cabral, 46, of Winchester, late Monday night, said Officer Marc Hale of the California Highway Patrol.
Cabral was driving a 1998 Geo Metro west on the eastbound lanes of state Route 905 just after 11:30 p.m., according to witnesses who alerted the CHP.
Officers caught up to Cabral on Interstate 5 near Coronado Avenue after Cabral had driven about three miles north on the southbound lanes of the freeway, Hale said.
He was going fast, Hale said. There were near-collisions with several cars.
Officers followed alongside him with lights and sirens on, Hale said, in an attempt to get Cabral to stop and to warn other drivers.
Cabral crashed into the Border Patrol agent north of E Street, Hale said.
Mark Endicott, a Border Patrol spokesman, said the off-duty agent was taken to the hospital and has not been released. His condition and injuries were not made public. Cabral was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, felony driving under the influence and assault with a deadly weapon.
