BRIDGEPORT, Texas -- A Bridgeport police officer died when his patrol car was struck by a fleeing vehicle.

City of Bridgeport spokeswoman Amber Fogelman says the officer died at the scene Thursday afternoon when the suspect's vehicle rammed the rear of the patrol car.

Fogelman says the suspect also was hurt in the wreck that ended the pursuit which started in Decatur. She says the officer had waved over a northbound vehicle, which stopped, then the patrol car was struck by the fleeing vehicle.

Fogelman says the officer was dead at the scene. TV coverage showed most of the Bridgeport police car was demolished.

Bridgeport is about 45 miles northwest of Fort Worth

His name has been released... Apparently, he wasn't directly involved in the chase, but he was trying to clear the road ahead of the chase so no one would be hurt.

BRIDGEPORT — A 32-year-old Bridgeport police officer was killed Thursday afternoon, the first on-duty death of an officer in the department’s history, when a sport utility vehicle being pursued by law officers rear-ended his parked cruiser, officials reported.

Officer Randy White was on the west shoulder of Texas 114 near the Farm Road 2123 intersection near Bridgeport, trying to warn traffic away from the pursuit that was approaching on 114.

White had waved over a pickup hauling a trailer and was seated in his cruiser with lights flashing about 3:15 p.m. when a Suburban rammed his car, senior DPS trooper Gary M. Rozzell said.

The impact shoved the cruiser into the back of the trailer, killing White.

The driver of the Suburban, identified as Stephen York, 43, was flown to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, where he was in fair condition late Thursday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

York had been pursued by DPS troopers and Wise County sheriff’s deputies since about 2:40 p.m. when a sheriff’s sergeant tried to pull him over after a hit-and-run collision on U.S. 287 in Decatur, said Amber Fogelman, a spokeswoman for the city of Bridgeport.

York was then driving a white pickup. He sped away from the sergeant and was southbound on Farm Road 51 when the sergeant lost sight of him, authorities said.

A short while later, another Wise County deputy spotted York, then driving a Suburban that was later reported stolen in Decatur, and the pursuit began again.

DPS troopers and three Bridgeport police officers were called to assist.

White had "waved the truck driver over to get him out of the way" of the chase when he was hit, Rozzell said.

York is known to Wise County authorities, Rozzell said. No details were available.

York faces a capital murder charge, and bail has been set at $1 million.

White spent nearly five years with the 16-officer department, Fogelman said. He was married with a 5-year-old daughter, Fogelman said.

get him out of the path of the chase.

A Bridgeport man suspected of driving a stolen SUV was charged with capital murder Thursday after he crashed into a patrol car, killing a police officer, authorities said.

Bridgeport police Sgt. Randy White, 32, was in his patrol car behind a parked pickup along State Highway 114 near FM2123 in Bridgeport about 3:16 p.m. when the SUV driven by Steven York slammed into the rear of the patrol car, said Amber Fogelman, a spokeswoman for the city of Bridgeport, which is about 45 miles northwest of Fort Worth.

The impact caused the squad car to hit the pickup. White died at the scene. The 43-year-old York, who has previous arrests on misdemeanor charges, was taken via helicopter ambulance to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, where he was listed in fair condition Thursday night. The driver of the pickup wasn't injured.

York was in the custody of the Texas Rangers late Thursday. He was charged with capital murder and was being held on $1 million bail, the Wise County Sheriff's Office said.

Wise County sheriff's office authorities had been in pursuit of York starting in Decatur on U.S. Highway 287, police said. The sheriff's office asked the Bridgeport police for help about 3:08 p.m., and three Bridgeport officers, including White, responded.

White waved over a pickup that was headed north on Highway 114 to prevent the driver from being injured in the oncoming pursuit. The pickup driver pulled over onto the side of the road, and White was parked behind him with his red lights on when the crash happened.

Fogelman said White had been with the Bridgeport Police Department since 2004. White is the department's first officer to die in the line of duty.
