A Houston police officer was shot in the head on Sunday morning.

The officer was rushed to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

According to reports, the officer had pulled a Durango SUV over around 8:30 a.m. on a routine traffic stop. But instead of waiting for the officer to question him, the suspect jumped out of the car and ran through the Luxor Park Apartments near West Tidwell in northwest Houston.

The officer chased the suspect into the complex, and that's when the shooting began.

As the officer rounded a corner, witnesses said the gunman crouched low, drew his gun and ambushed him before he even had a chance to fire in self defense.

The suspect allegedly fired several shots. Police are still investigating how many shots were fired, but there are several bullet holes in apartment walls and in at least one car. One of the bullets also hit the officer in the head.

Witnesses said that after firing, the suspect watched the officer fall, and then calmly walked back to his SUV and drove away, leaving the man to die.

"It makes me sad to know it's one of our officers that protect us," said Marie Steele, Luxor Park resident.

Before the shooting began, the officer had keyed the man's license plate number into his patrol car computer. Fellow officers were able to track the plate to a home at Greens Road and Hombly, just eight miles away from the scene.

Police arrested a man at that location. They believe he had changed his clothes to hide his identity, but witnesses told police that he was the shooter.

"We have been able to get witness identification from at least one witness," said detectives from HPD.

Luxor Park was already a rough neighborhood. There are faded flowers and balloons marking the same sidewalk where the officer died. The faded ones are for a man named Deuce, who was gunned down at the location a month ago.

"My heart goes out to the family of the officer involved. I pray that God gives them understanding," said Steele.

Detectives are still gathering evidence. They are searching with dogs and a metal detector to find out how many bullets were fired. They are also still looking for the killer's gun.

The officer's name has not been disclosed, but we do know he was an 11 year veteran of HPD's North Division.

A different news story said he left a wife, daughter and son who is currently stationed in Italy.

RIP

HOUSTON -- Houston Police are mourning the loss of one of their own, who was fatally shot during a traffic stop on Sunday morning.

Dozens of officers and the victim's wife gathered at Memorial Hermann Hospital where the 12-year-veteran of the force was pronounced dead a short time after the shooting.

Police say the officer was shot just before 9 a.m. when he pulled over a Dodge Durango at an apartment complex on West Sunforest.

Police say the driver jumped out of the SUV and ran into the complex with the officer following close behind on foot.

Witnesses tell FOX 26 News the suspect waited for the officer to come around a corner and opened fire on him, hitting him at least once. An unconfirmed report says the officer suffered a shot to the head and was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

While police have not confirmed a suspect was arrested, officers apprehended a suspect at a nearby location after the shooting.

Police say this is the third murder at the apartment complex in less than three weeks.

It is not worth running after the suspect when you lose sight of him in the ghetto. Maintain the scene and call for units to set up a perimeter. If he gets away you will get him again another day.

It is 100% important to never run around a building without tactically doing so. Approach with your weapon drawn, and round the corner at a wide angle so you cannot be ambushed. Don't let your adrenaline get the best of you. Remain calm and in control. SAFETY FIRST!

+1 Especially in a case like this. You have his vehicle and info, impound it, and set up a perimeter.

This is extremely sad. I hope this cop killer gets his on a daily basis once (IF) he makes it to prison. There is no true justice, but he will get a taste hopefully soon.
