Oakland, CA: Four Officers, Suspect Killed
4 police shot, suspect killed, after traffic stop
By TERRY COLLINS, Associated Press Writer Terry Collins, Associated Press Writer 16 mins ago
OAKLAND, Calif. – Four officers were in critical condition and a suspect dead on Saturday after gunfire at a traffic stop led to a massive manhunt that ended in a shootout, police said.
Two officers were shot in the first incident just after 1 p.m. after they stopped the suspect's vehicle in east Oakland, said Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason.
The suspect fled the scene on foot into a nearby neighborhood, police said, leading to an intense manhunt by dozens of Oakland police, California Highway Patrol officers and Alameda County sheriff deputies. Streets were roped off and an entire area of east Oakland shut to traffic.
At about 3:30 p.m. officers, acting on an anonymous tip, found the suspect, who had barricaded himself in a building.
"We had SWAT officers go into that building and that's where the second shooting took place," said Thomason.
The suspect was killed in the exchange, and two more officers wounded.
All four officers are in critical condition at Highland Hospital, Thomason said. Dozens of people, including other officers gathered outside the hospital awaiting word of their colleagues' condition.
Acting Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan said the department was still investigating.
"At this point we don't believe there are other people involved, but it's too early to tell," he said.
Meanwhile, the mood was somber outside the police station in Oakland as the investigation continued.
"This is a highly sensitive situation that we're dealing with right now with our OPD family, and we're still trying to notify family members that their family members were hurt," Thomason said.

4 Oakland officers down- all in critical condition
CNN) -- Four police officers are in critical condition and a suspect is dead after two shootings in an Oakland, California, neighborhood, Saturday afternoon, police confirmed.
Police received a call around 1:15 p.m. reporting two officers down on MacArthur Boulevard, Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan said.
A manhunt was under way for the shooter when an anonymous caller directed authorities to a building on an adjacent street where the gunman was believed to be barricaded, Jordan said.
The gunman opened fire, wounding two more officers before police returned fire, killing the suspect, Jordan said.
The four officers were taken to Highland Hospital, Officer Jeff Thomason said.
Police said they are investigating whether others were involved in the incident, but don't believe there is another shooter.
Aerial video from the scene off East 27th Street in Oakland showed crime-scene investigators blocking off a a portion of a street, and a sidewalk smeared with pools of blood.
Law enforcement swarmed store fronts and lawns near the shooting scenes.

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Three Oakland police officers were killed, another gravely wounded and a suspect was slain in a gun battle with a SWAT team Saturday in two related shootings that have rocked the community, authorities said. . At an emotional Saturday evening press conference, Acting Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan confirmed the deaths.
Authorities said the deadly spree began with a traffic stop at 74th Ave. and MacArthur Blvd. at about 1:08 p.m. Two motorcycle officers were gravely wounded at that location and the armed suspect fled into a nearby building, authorities said.
Sgt. Mark Dunakin, 40, died of his wounds, Jordan said, and Sgt. John Hege was gravely wounded and battling for his life.
A short time later, acting on a tip, police surrounded a building on Hillside St. and 74th Ave -- a block from the initial shooting scene. A SWAT team was sent in and shot it out with a suspect, who had barricaded himself inside and was armed with an assault weapon. Two officers were killed in the exchange of fire and the suspect killed.
The officers killed were identified by Jordan as Ervin Romans, 42, and Daniel Saki, 35.
“We received information as to the whereabouts of where the suspect was,” Thomason said. “We had SWAT officers go into that building and that’s where the shooting took place.”
Jordan said the department was still investigating, but they did not believe there were any other suspects.
Hours after Saturday's shootings near a busy intersection just blocks from a police substation in east Oakland, people were still at the scene of the first shooting as police tape blocked off streets.
Mo Wiley, 32, of Oakland, said emotions still are raw from the Grant shooting.
"Oakland is a beautiful place," Wiley said. "But I just hate when it gets ugly like this."
Meanwhile about 20 people taunted police near the scene of the first shooting.
A group of Oakland ministers went to the hospital to offer prayers and condolences to the family members of the injured officers and the dozens of Oakland police officers who gathered there.
They said that on Sunday morning they would urge their parishioners not to let the event tear the city apart.
Pastor Raymond Lankford, executive director of Healthy Oakland, urged people to show support for the officers and their families.
"What officers do, that's a tough job," Lankford said. "They need love, they need support. They need to know the community is behind them."

Law enforcement officers find cover behind a car on 73th ave in Oakland Calif., Saturday, March...

OAKLAND — In the most horrific day of Oakland Police Department history, three police sergeants were shot to death by the same gunman within two hours of each other. A fourth officer involved in a second shooting with the suspect also was wounded and is in extremely critical condition Saturday night.
The three veteran officers killed were all sergeants: Erv Romans, 43, , Dan Sakai, 35, and Mark Dunakin, 41,, police said. This was the first time that any sergeants in the department have been slain. Officer John Hege, 41, of Concord is on life support at Highland Hospital. A fifth officer was grazed by a bullet. He was treated and released from the hospital.
The suspect is identified as Lovell Mixon, 27, of Oakland who was on parole for assault with a deadly weapon, has not been released, police said. He had no-bail warrant for his arrest for violating parole. He has prior convictions in Alameda County for grand theft and possession of marijuana.
The incident represents the highest number of police officers ever killed in the line duty on the same day in Oakland.
"This is just unbelievable, everyone is in shock," said one Oakland police sergeant.
The first shooting happened in the 7400 block of MacArthur Boulevard about 1:16 p.m. when two motorcycle officers were shot to death during a traffic stop. What led to the shooting was not immediately known.
A man, who did not want be identified, said he heard gunshots and saw the officers laying on roadway.
"I went over to one officer and saw he was bleeding from his helmet pretty bad," he said. "The other officer was laying motionless."
He said the officer laying near a car had two gun shot bullets near in his face. One bullet was lodged in his jaw and the other in his neck. The man proceeded to give the officer CPR until other police arrived, he said.
Helicopters hovered for hours over the crime scene. Officers staked out the neighborhood trying to find the suspects.
Dozens of Oakland police, California Highway Patrol officers and Alameda County sheriff deputies had cordoned off stretches of blocks around 73rd and 74th Avenues and MacArthur Boulevard before learning information that the suspect was holed up in an apartment around the corner on 74th Avenue.
Two hours later SWAT officers were wounded and killed in an exchange of gunfire while trying to arrest the suspect holed up in an apartment a block away from the first shooting.
As news of the shootings reached the Oakland police community, officers showed up in droves at both Highland Hospital, where the officers were taken to and the Eastmont Substation, just a few blocks from the shooting scene.
Some officers were crying uncontrollably while others hugged each other. Mayor Ron Dellums visited the Oakland Police Officers Association to offer his condolences.
No one could remember when three officers were ever killed in the line of duty on the same day. The last time an officer was killed and another was shot was on the same day was in 1970 during a gang-involved robbery.
Before Saturday, 47 Oakland police officers have been killed in the lined of duty since department was formed in 1867.
On Saturday, officers were walking to the substation consoling each other, some visibly crying, to attend a news conference at 4:30 p.m.
The last time an Oakland officer was killed was in 2004 when William Seuis, 39, who died in a hit-and-run crash. In addition, Gabe Guider and Wendell Troyer were the last two officers who died on the same day in the line of duty in a helicopter crash in 1974.

Looks like PGG found a similar article to what I did that I posted in the other thread on this.
As for the taunters, and officers involved in the shooting? I think Virginian expressed it succinctly. The dirtbag that did the shooting can go to hell, too.
My condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the fallen.
