The Sweetest Sound in the World

A couple of weeks ago it was a busy Saturday night in my area. The bars were packed with people getting hammered. I heard two of my guys announce over the radio that they were out on a disturbance at one of the clubs in that block. This is usually no big thing because everyone tends to calm down once the police show up. However drunks are not exactly the most predictable of people.

I was pedaling that way at a normal pace when I heard a burst of noise come over the radio. I could hear yelling in the background and an officer started to say something but cut off before he could say more than one syllable. I immediately recognized the voice as one of the officers out on the disturbance. Our dispatcher started calling his name but he didn’t respond.

This gave me a very bad feeling so I kicked it in high gear and hauled ass to their location. When I got there I saw a huge crowd and everyone was yelling. One of the officers had deployed his taser and was on top of a big guy on the ground. The second officer was shoving people back as they came up screaming at the cops. I could smell OC spray in the air.

As I rolled up I saw a person run past the second officer and grab the first officer from behind. It looked like he was trying to pull the first officer off his buddy. It was obvious these drunk clowns were getting bolder as they realized how outnumbered the officers were. I jumped off my bike and pulled this jackass off the officer and slammed him to the ground. We started to roll around when another drunk jackass came over and grabbed my arm. I kicked him in the groin as hard as I could and he fell over into the crowd. I heard another taser deployment behind me but had no idea who had been hit.

Things were rapidly getting out of control but luckily dispatch had put out an “officer needs assistance call” when she couldn’t raise any of us on the radio. When an “O and A” goes out, all cops in the surrounding areas drop whatever they are doing and rush over to help. Let me tell you, it is the sweetest sound in the world to hear those sirens in the background getting closer.

Soon units were flying up from all directions and officers were running toward us with their batons out. Suddenly the sky lit up and there was a police helicopter overhead spotlighting us. It was a wonderful thing.

We ended up taking 5 or 6 people to jail for assault, interfering with the police, and other related charges. I think 2 got tasered, 4 got sprayed, and I don’t how many got a little more personal attention. It all started because some guy got kicked out a club and tried to start a fight with the bouncers. When the officers told him he needed leave, he rushed the cops. Once they put hands on him, his friends decided to get involved and this encouraged every other drunk fool to get involved.

Luckily we had more friends than he did that night.
